Here is the next in our series on Square Foot Gardening. If you've missed the others, you can find them here :
Today we will be covering Planting, which is one of the most satisfying aspects of gardening. With square foot gardening planting is very easy because nothing is really left up to chance. The spacing has all been worked out ahead of time, all you need to do is follow it.
To do that it's easiest to work with a template, and you can make one easily yourself.
At simply resourceful they have worked out a very clever spacing method.
And at http://chiotsrun.com/2009/03/19/square-foot-gardening-templates/ They show you how to make a template like this one.
Many garden specialty stores now carry special pots for square foot gardens that include planting templates like this one above.
And at www.squarefootgardening.com you can buy several planting aids including raised bed kits that include foot square grids and grids to use in your own beds like the one pictured above. They come made out of either wood or vinyl.
The only other thing left for you to decide is whether to plant from seed or to use starter plants from the garden centre.
If you are going to start your planting from seed, you might as well go all the way and get organic seed if at all possible. There are several companies that sell them online. Here are just a few.
As for exactly how to start your plants, here are some excellent articles that will tell you everything you need to know.
This one is specifically on organic seed starting.
And if you are visual, here are a few videos for good measure.
