Dim the lights once the sun goes down

In order to get a good night's sleep, it is often recommended that you dim the lights in the evening.  Dim light let's your body know that soon it will be time for sleep.

You can of course use a dimmer on your lights, and this is a very convenient way of controlling the brightness, but why not also indulge in the simple pleasures of candle light?  For a few dollars you can start a collection of candles that will not only give you the dim light recommended for evenings, but will also often fill your room with scent as well.

Before electric lights, it was a common practice for people who wanted to read in the evenings to read by candle light.  We don't have to go to that extreme, but candles can still add a lot to our lives.

If you think about it, we already use candles on many occasions.

Christmas, for instance is a traditional time for candles.

And so is Halloween.

And what about birthdays?  You can't have a birthday cake without candles.

But candles are not just for special occassions.  Using candles on a regular basis can be a lovely little indulgence that costs pennies a day.

Start a collection of candles and see how many different ones you can find that appeal to you.  They are easy to find just about anywhere.  They are not expensive.  And if you don't want to be bothered searching the shops, here are just a few available on Amazon.com

Remember the posts I've written about herbs and how they can help you sleep?  Well here are some aromatherapy candles that use these scents.  They range from $7.99 to $9.98 and come in sets as well. And how do you use them?  Lots of ways.  Here are just a few .....

When you're having a party, use them to light a path to your door.  Just fill paper bags with sand and put the candle in the middle.

Put candles in Mason jars and use them as a centrepiece on your table. (This works inside just as well.)

Or hang the jars from trees to light your table or patio.

And if you have a pool floating lights in it  or lining the edge of the pool with candles can create a spectacular centerpiece.

Inside you can get wall sconces to hold your candles.

When it's too hot for a fire, candles look wonderful in a fireplace, giving you that same kind of light but without the heat.

Many women know about the relaxing effects of candles and use them on a regular basis when taking their baths.

I could go on and on ... but I'm sure you get the idea.  You can use candles all over your home to give you soft relaxing light.

One final tip.  When you're going out for that romantic dinner, insist on candles on your table.  Not only will they give you the right ambiance .... you will look beautiful by candlelight as well!
