Pool Exercises - How to exercise in a pool

Even though I've written about the need for regular exercise, I realize that for many people because of a variety of reasons, regular exercise such as walking or biking may not be possible, so today I'd like to write about another option - pool exercises, or how to exercise in a pool.

Exercising in water is especially good for those who suffer from joint problems or arthritis and there are many programs that you can do either in a class or in your own pool at home.

Here are a series of pool exercises done after a hip surgery so they are very gentle.

Sometimes it's a lot easier to actually see an exercise demonstrated, which is were having free videos online is really useful.  Here are a few to check out.

Pool exercises are not only good for an aerobic workout but you can also do weight training in a pool as well.

Here is just one video that's available that shows you how to exercise in a pool.

There are books written specifically on water exercises geared to different fitness levels.  Here are a few to check out.

There are even special pieces of equipment you can get specifically designed for use in your pool such as these dumbells.

You can get a good workout just by swimming laps as Dr. Al Sears explains in his book about the 12 minute PACE workout. (I wrote a post about it here.)

So if you find exercising difficult because of any kind of physical complaint you might have, pool exercises could very well be the answer, and classes are available at most pools now so you can easily learn how to exercise in a pool.

Of course having your own pool has to be the ultimate. Then you can do your exercising privately - which would be my choice. And having an infinity edge pool like the one below would definitely be amazing.  Not really necessary ..... but we can always dream.

  3. Thanks for the detailed tips and videos. I love indoor workouts. Specially on the indoor cycling bikes. It gives me more enjoyable workout experience. BTW I would surely try this pool workout ;)
