Take a walk - Indoors




For years we have been told that walking is great exercise.  In fact it's one of the easiest, cheapest and most recommended.  But for some people, finding a place to go walking can be a real challenge.


If you live in a part of the world where the weather is conducive to going out and walking regularly, you really can't do any easier exercise that's better for your health.


Getting out into the fresh air, whether it's a country walk or a city park, can be a very relaxing experience as well as a great way to get in your slow moving exercise each week.


However many people don't have easy access to the outdoors, and even when they do, their surroundings are not very inspiring.  When you live in a big city for instance with limited green space, trying to walk on city sidewalks can be potentially life-threatening.  Yes, I'm talking about the fumes and pollution, but there are also other threats to your well-being.


Some neighbourhoods have a lot of dogs roaming around, and although usually harmless, there are many who are not.


In some neighbourhoods bikers ride not only on the roads but also on the sidewalks and if you're not quick on your feet can be a real danger.  This can be especially threatening to senior citizens who may not be as steady on their feet as the rest of us.


Finally there is sometimes just the sheer volume of people and traffic that you have to contend with that can totally put you off.

So what can you do if you want to walk for exercise?


The obvious answer is to walk on a treadmill, but this can be expensive.  Treadmills aren't cheap and they take up room in your home.  You could join a gym, but that isn't cheap either.  Some people are lucky enough to live in a community with a gym for the residents, and that's a good option if you are in that position, but not everyone wants to use joint facilities.  Some people prefer to exercise alone.


Another option is to go Mall walking.  This has become very popular, especially in parts of the country where the weather is very cold in the winter.  But unfortunately malls aren't always accessible to all of us either. And even if there is one close to where you live, you are limited to off hours when the stores are closed and often this means getting up very early in the morning or walking late at night -  times when a lot of us are not feeling very energetic.


There is another option that I have recently found and which I think can be a great solution - walking in your home.  You don't get the benefit of fresh air and beautiful views, but if you aren't going to be getting that where you live anyway, you really aren't missing anything.


Leslie Sansone has a series of books and  videos that will teach you everything you need to know, and allow you to get all the benefits of walking in a tiny space by just walking on the spot.  It might seem strange, but it's actually a very good workout, and you can do this in the comfort of your home whenever it fits into your schedule.



There are several videos on YouTube that will give you a good idea what this form of exercise is all about.




It's also a great way to get an exercise break if you have to work for hours without end in an office.  Close your door (hopefully you have one) and do this 3 minute walk video on YouTube.



Especially if you have been feeling tired and overworked, spending just 3 minutes this way can give you a new lease on life and keep you going until your workday ends.
