Want a Vegetable Garden this Year? Start Planning Now!

It might seem strange for me to be writing about gardening in January when a lot of the country is covered with ice and snow, but if you are serious about having a vegetable garden this year, now is the best time to start planning.

In January and February all the major seed houses start sending out their catalogues, and there is nothing more restful on a cold blustery day than spending an evening with a hot cup of tea or cocoa and a pile of catalogues, planning and dreaming.

Of course, you have to have the catalogues to be able to look through them.  Even though I  do a lot of shopping online, I still find looking through catalogues a great way to relax.  If you feel this way as well, here are a few links where you can sign up to receive them :

StokeSeeds
Vesey's seeds
Burpee Seeds
Thompson Morgan (in the UK)

A quick search on google will give you more links for your particular area of the world.

This is also a good time to think about last year's garden and how you want to improve on it this year.  Do you want to try a bigger garden? Grow some different vegetables?  Or maybe you want to downsize and see what you can grow in a smaller space.  Check out my post on garden planning for some good ideas.

If you're brand new to gardening you might like to start with an indoor herb garden or even try your hand at growing some sprouts.  It's always a good plan to start slowly so you don't get overwhelmed.

Whatever your garden plans, thinking about them now means you will be ready to go once those first spring days finally arrive.  Most people order everything they need now online (as in this example from nittygrittydirtfarm.blogspot.com.)

Once you've decided what kind of garden you will have and placed your order, you can sit back and relax.  All you have to do now is wait for spring, then you can start checking your mailbox.
