Basics : Taco Seasoning

When I travelled in Mexico, I ate in many local restaurants and learned to really appreciate the cooking.

One of the hardest things to give up when going Paleo for many - me included - is Mexican food.  Enchilladas, Tostadas, Faijtas, Nacos and Tacos - I love them all, and when I'm tempted to cheat it's usually with Mexican. So it was important to me to come up with some good alternatives, and I think I've managed to do that. They aren't exactly like the corn version, but all the flavours are there and they satisfy the cravings.

I'll share them all with you in my next few posts, but today it's all about basics.

Whenever you want to make Mexican food at home, one of the main things you need is a good Taco seasoning.  Unfortunately the stuff sold in those little packets in most grocery stores is full of all kinds of ingredients you really don't want to be eating.

The best thing is to buy some proper seasoning from a spice company.  When I'm in Canada I buy mine from The Silk Road spice company.  They will mail anywhere in Canada, and they have wonderful fresh spices and spice blends.

If you want to try your hand at making your own seasoning, here is a good recipe.  It makes a lot, but having a jar of this mix stashed in your spice cupboard means you will be ready to make Mexican food whenever the cravings hit.

Ingredients :

-  1/2 cup chili powder
-  4 tablespoons of ground cumin
-  3 tablespoons of sea salt
-  3 tablespoons of ground black pepper
-  1 1/2 tablespoons of paprika
-  2 teaspoons of garlic powder
-  2 teaspoons of onion powder
-  1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes (This makes it pretty spicy so adjust to taste.)
-  2 teaspoons dried oregano

Directions :
  • Put all ingredients into a large jar and mix well.
